Jim Scott
I’m a photographer from Northumberland, in the UK.
I use photography as a way to capture the impact that history has had on our landscapes and culture.
In particular, my passion is for the coastlines, hills and countryside of my home county of Northumberland, which borders England and Scotland.
Northumberland has endured a turbulent and bloody past and as a result, boasts more castles than any other county in England (Over 70 in total).
So I try to combine my passion for visual story telling and our beautiful landscapes with these remnants of the past, which often feature in my images too.
My Story
I’ve always been an early riser and I have a fascination for the hours before the sunrises, and experiencing the outdoors, before the world wakes up.
I began photography as a way of combining my love of early mornings, with the rugged beauty of the landscapes around me. That quickly escalated to an obsession with photography, and lead to my wanting to understand more about the history of the things I was photographing.
In 2022 I won the Northern Photography Prize, and in 2023 I was shortlisted for World Historic Photographer of the Year. I work closely with Visit Northumberland and my images have also been featured on national TV, in history books such as Dan Snow’s ‘The History of England’ and in various publications, such as; The Telegraph, Daily Mail and National Trust Magazine.
